Dimethyl sulfate, abbreviated as DMS, alias methyl sulfate, is an industrial methylating agent. The molecular formula is C2H6O4S, which is a colorless to light yellow liquid with a slight odor. The relative molecular mass is 126.13 and the pair density is 1.3283. The melting point is -27 degrees Celsius, the boiling point is 188 degrees Celsius, the flash point is 83 degrees Celsius (closed), 115.6 degrees Celsius, the refractive index is 1.3874, and the viscosity is 1.60 mpa · s (25 degrees Celsius). Insoluble in carbon disulfide and aliphatic hydrocarbons, slightly soluble in water, ether, benzene, etc., miscible with ethanol. It can be decomposed by cold water and alkali solution. Flammable and highly toxic.
