Product Description

Potassium iodide is commonly known as gray iodine. Chemical formula KI. Molecular weight 166.00. Colorless or white cubic crystals. The taste is salty and bitter. Slightly deliquescent in humid air, easily oxidized when exposed to air, precipitates iodine and gradually turns yellow. Light and moisture can accelerate its decomposition. Specific gravity 3.13. Melting point 681 ºC. Boiling point 1330 ºC. Easy to dissolve in water, soluble in ethanol, glycerol, and liquid slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline, and water-soluble Chemicalbook solution can dissolve iodine, generating triiodide ions (I3-). Its aqueous solution is also prone to oxidation and yellowing, making it easier when acidic. Adding alkali can prevent it. Obtained by the interaction of hydroiodic acid and potassium bicarbonate. Used as an analytical reagent and raw material for producing iodides and dyes, as well as as as a photosensitive emulsifier and food additive. In medicine, it is used to prevent and treat goiter (large neck disease), as well as for preoperative preparation of hyperthyroidism. In addition, it can also be used as expectorant and diuretic drugs.
